In 2019, adults in Kentucky experienced a higher prevalence of heart attack (6.4%), coronary heart disease (5.7%) and stroke (4.9%) compared to national averages (heart attack 4.3%, coronary heart disease 3.9% and stroke 3.1%).1 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identify high blood pressure, obesity and physical inactivity as primary contributors to heart disease and stroke.2
The American Heart Association (AHA), the oldest and largest voluntary organization fighting heart disease and stroke in the U.S., spearheads research and initiatives targeting cardiovascular risk factors. In a concerted effort to enhance health outcomes for Kentuckians, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Kentucky is collaborating with AHA to make a significant impact in the community.
The AHA’s Kentuckiana Centennial Marketwide Sponsorship offers companies a unique opportunity to engage with the entire Kentucky market while supporting vital cardiovascular initiatives. Participating companies can invest and participate in the following events:
- Libraries with Heart: investment in this community-based blood pressure screening program provides a library in Owensboro, Kentucky with a tabletop blood pressure machine, a loaner blood pressure monitor for home use, educational materials and connection to low-cost, clinical care.
- Heart Ball: this annual gala raises funds to support AHA’s goal of improving cardiovascular health across the U.S.
- Go Red for Women: this event raises awareness about heart disease and stroke being the primary cause of death for women in the U.S.
UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Kentucky invested $15k across all four events. The plan’s investment will help to fund cardiovascular research as well as initiatives that address social inequities that exist for underserved communities. The investment additionally provides critical resources for schools and companies working to improve health outcomes of local residents.
