People who are pregnant in the United States experience adverse maternal and birth outcomes at higher rates than in most other developed nations. The maternal mortality rate among Black individuals is three times higher than that of white individuals – one of the widest disparities in maternal health.1
UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of North Carolina is committed to providing support throughout maternal health journeys, from before pregnancy to after childbirth. Our goal is to improve both the pregnant individual and the child’s health outcomes by increasing access to care, considering whole-person health and reducing health disparities.
Our Healthy First Steps (HFS) program provides care management services to high-risk individuals who may need extra support and services. Local care teams seek to engage and empower them by providing education; supporting them in their care plan; removing barriers to prenatal and postpartum care; and linking them to resources to support healthy pregnancies, deliveries, and early childhood and family planning.
