Exploring the experiences and diverse needs of the aging population

For over a decade, UnitedHealthcare Community & State’s National Advisory Board has been dedicated to improving care for older people and people living with disabilities. This year, the board is prioritizing efforts to challenge conventional views on aging, considering the diverse identities and cultural contexts that influence this process.

Research highlights that older Americans face increased risks of chronic conditions and disabilities, often delaying necessary care due to financial constraints and lack of insurance. While Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act has improved access for this population, significant disparities persist, particularly for people of color, low-income individuals and those living in non-expansion states. Additionally, older adults generally have less access to affordable and accessible housing, nutritious food and transportation, and they are less likely to have adequate social connections compared to younger generations. These disparities are further exacerbated by factors such as race, ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation. Providing essential resources earlier in the aging process can maximize health, welfare and independence, potentially reducing the need for intensive eldercare as individuals reach their eighties and nineties.

In collaboration with Healthsperien, UnitedHealthcare Community & State has developed a series of papers exploring the experiences of Americans aged 50 to 70. This first paper takes a strengths-based approach to understanding the varied experiences of individuals within this age range, focusing on health care, functional economic needs and health-related social needs. Upcoming papers will identify the impactful policies, challenges resulting from those policies and opportunities to address noted challenges.

By addressing these critical issues, we aim to foster a more inclusive and supportive environment for older adults, ensuring they receive the care and resources necessary to maximize well-being while aging.
